Objective:To assess the efficacy of Propecia (finasteride) in men with mild-to-moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with and without prostate cancer (PC) and to compare the efficacy of Propecia with finasteride. Methods: We conducted a prospective study of 2-year clinical outcomes of men with mild-to-moderate BPH with and without prostate cancer (PC) and/or prostate cancer or prostate cancer in a tertiary care referral center. Patients were excluded if they had any of the following: history of PC and/or prostate cancer; a history of prostate cancer; a family history of prostate cancer; a previous radical prostatectomy; a history of prostate cancer; a history of male or female sexual dysfunction; a family history of prostate cancer; or history of PC or prostate cancer. Data were extracted from the study database of the British National Formulary (BNF). The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of the University of Sheffield and the University of Manchester School of Pharmacy (reference number BNF-2013-08-067). The study patients were aged 40 to 60 years old with a body mass index (BMI) of 25.0 or more (normal weight: BMI 25.0-29.9 kg/m2) or a BMI of ≥ 30 kg/m2 (BMI 30-39.9 kg/m2). The exclusion criteria were as follows: history of prostate cancer; a family history of prostate cancer; any history of male or female sexual dysfunction (including ED); or a recent MI or ED (including prostatectomy or prostate biopsy).
